2014 Travel Trends to Watch

Many have already planned their 2014 getaways, and the numbers are in: cruises continue to gain top marks among American travelers and niche destinations such as New Zealand, Australia, and Peru have spiked in popularity. Procrastinators take notes—you may still be able to plan that winter 2014 vacation yet.

According to a dailynews.com article, European river cruises take the cake for most desired vacation in 2014. The ships, gliding among age-old architecture, offer all the relaxation of a trip on a Caribbean liner, while also allowing passengers to experience urban life in up to 15 foreign cities. The river trips make exceptional family vacations, as they provide an historical education aspect as well as fun and adventure.

The small island of New Zealand will have no shortage of visitors thanks to “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second movie in The Hobbit trilogy released in 2013. With picturesque landscapes at every turn of the camera, the movies portray the island so beautifully that it’s no surprise travelers are trekking across the globe to get a look for themselves. New Zealand offers outdoor entertainment for adventurous types such as skiing, kayaking, hiking, and stargazing.

Similarly, other niche destinations have grown in popularity with tourists. Locales such as Peru’s Machu Picchu, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, and Iceland’s volcanoes and Nordic countryside have reported increases in tourism for 2014.

2014 has, though, borrowed from its preceding year travel trends that are considered timeless by some. Cruise vacations, especially of the Disney variety, sails through the Caribbean, and trips to Orlando and Las Vegas are staples of American travel. By contrast, 2013 saw a few trends of its own including family international travel, tours with volunteer opportunities, and food and beverage based explorations.

What will 2015 bring in travel trends? We might get a clue from blockbuster hits á la The Hobbit, which in 2014 will include The Legend of Hercules’ Grecian landscapes or Godzilla’s NYC backdrop. Or, we might just have to let time tell.
